Digital Abiogenesis

Digital Abiogenesis

Part 1

True Artificial Intelligence cannot emerge from Large Language Models or Deep Learning.

One of the more compelling arguments for intelligent design revolves around the concept of Abiogenesis.

Abiogenesis is the process of life emerging from non-life – the idea that chemical combinations over a span of time resulted in the early life forms on Earth.

It's simple enough to say that if you are a true atheist, who rejects any divinity or supernatural explanation for life, then you must believe in abiogenesis. Some argue that you can reject both the divine and abiogenesis. However, that's not an argument – it's nonsense, so we aren't going to waste any more time on it.

Part of the reason for abiogenesis existing as a testament to a creator is our inability to replicate it. If life is just primordial ooze, amino acids, and other organic molecules, we should be able to recreate it in the 21st century. We should be able to combine molecules into a life form.

I believe that proof of abiogenesis, either in artificial life forms digitally or physically in an organic chem lab would prove as it's possible in the wild. I think we can program our way into knowing if the divine exists.

Artificial Intelligence is emerging at a rate unfathomable in comparison to any other technological advancement in the history of the human race. However, as OpenAI, Apple, and Google race towards the fastest, most useful, and accurate AI by refining their large language models (LLMs), they are quite likely going to hit a brick wall.

Whatever you call that final boss level of AI – artificial general intelligence, the singularity, or the machine soul will require a different way of thinking. AI is directly linked to many issues commonly debated in philosophy specifically metaphysical issues like free will. If human's don't have free will AGI is will be achieved by an LLM that is capable of self improvement. However, if the compatibilism arguments that acknowledge prior causes and the ability to do other hold true, AGI will still just be a very fancy LLM. True Artificial Intelligence requires something more.

The biggest project I'm working on right now is creating digital primordial ooze. There are two things that this experiment will prove. 1) abiogenesis is possible and it can be replicated digitally. 2) free will exists.

I'm thinking humanity needs work on building Optimus Prime, not C-3PO
